“All Things Visible and Invisible” is Ewa Budnik’s first individual exhibition. The artist uses the opportunity to refer to two key aspect of photography: time and matter. She made a series of portraits, which were later exposed onto self-made ceramic tiles. However, after some time it turned out that the photographic emulsion was absorbed by the surface, and the image gradually disappeared.

This unintended effect not only visually strengthened the message, but also contrasted with the idea of photography as a medium capable of preserving a moment in time. This feature becomes particularly important in the context of portrait photography, which from the very beginning has been supposed to exactly reflect the model’s image and counter the unstoppable passage of time. With regard to aesthetics, the artist’s work refers to the practice of artists using non-silver photography techniques, such as Sally Mann.

Ewa Budnik – born in 1984, a student of photography at the University of Arts in Poznań, lives and works in Wrocław. In photography she is fascinated by the alchemy of analogue processes and work on the delicate photo-sensitive emulsion. She is interested not only in the trace left by time on photography, but also in the trace left by photography itself. She is deeply convinced that the photo camera is a medium allowing us to see the world in a way that is not otherwise possible for the human eye.
