THE OPEN COLLECTION

In December 2019, the Marta’s Birthday exhibition was opened at Wrocław Contemporary Museum. This is the first permanent exhibition that initiates the Private Mythologies project – a series of presentations of the MWW collection, which will be updated every two years. The Open Collection programme, which lives and develops along with the exhibition, is a laboratory in which we examine the MWW collection from different perspectives, on many levels of interpretation: scientifically, creatively and socially.

We hope that our collection will be alive and that together with our audience and academics we will succeed in creating a tool for analysing the strategy of creating museum collections, ways of showing and interpreting them.

Below we list all the events that we have planned and those that have already taken place. We invite you to follow the programme and actively participate in the Open Collection laboratory.

EVENTS

During guided tours and lectures, we try to familiarise diverse audiences with the collection by inviting scientists, researchers, art historians or artists to subject it to critical analysis. The main areas of research are determined by four programme lines of the MWW collection: (1) Ludwiński Archive – covering the neo-avant-garde art of Wrocław; (2) Art of Central European Countries – connected with the geographical location of Wrocław and the tradition of contacts and international artistic exchange from the 1960s to the 1980s; (3) Identity – emphasising the personal experience of a human/artist and the tension between the rules and requirements of social life and individual needs; and (4) Present/Absent – which collects works with critical potential, looking for alternative models of art and life.

EDUCATION

Some of the proposed activities are conducted as part of the regular educational programmes, such as: Sunday Family Workshops, Exhibition Starter Without Barriers, Closer to Art. MWW for Senior Citizens, or Sensory Integration Workshops; other are separate, one-off events focusing on a specific subject.

PERSONALITIES OF THE COLLECTION
The Private Mythologies. Marta’s Birthday exhibition features nearly forty artists. Are you curious about who created your favourite work? During the selected Sunday Family Workshops, we will learn about the extraordinary artistic personalities represented in the MWW collection and create works that will become our original commentary on the art we explore.

THE MATERIAL OF THE COLLECTION
A latex sculpture? An object made of staples? An installation using a sleeping bag and an air humidifier? Anything can serve as a material for a work of art! The only limit is our imagination. We will devote selected meetings in the series Exhibition Starter Without Barriers, which is addressed to people with intellectual disabilities and movement impairments, to the methods and techniques in which the works presented at the Private Mythologies. Marta’s Birthday exhibition were made.

PERSONAL COLLECTION
During the series of Sensory Integration Workshops, we will find out that art can be experienced not only through eyesight. During the meetings, we will examine the material dimension of works through the sense of touch and focus on the sound and spatial layer of the Private Mythologies. Marta’s Birthday exhibition, creating personal, sensual collections. People with visual impairments are particularly welcome to attend the workshops.

CONTEXTS OF THE COLLECTION
During the selected meetings in the Closer to Art. MWW for Senior Citizens series, we will learn about the narrative behind the works purchased every year for the MWW international contemporary art collection. On the example of works presented at the Private Mythologies. Marta’s Birthday exhibition, we will get acquainted with the programmatic assumptions of the MWW collection. We will think about what artists want to bring to our attention, what issues they want us to discuss. Do artists have influence over the world through art?
