“Białystok. According to The Guardian’s ranking, the quality of life there is higher than in any other Polish city, it even exceeds Vienna and Barcelona. In the region of Podlasie, Poles lived alongside Ukrainians, Belarusians, Jews and Tatars. It was here that Esperanto was created and the first Polish child conceived by in vitro fertilisation was born. How did it happen that today’s media reports from the city are dominated by flats on fire, swastikas on the walls, anti-Semitism, racism and fights of football thugs?

Marcin Kącki searches for the traces left by the murdered neighbours, looks at the bleeding Host from Sokółka, reads memorial plaques and prosecutor’s files. He talks with activists, representatives of the authorities and the Church, with country dwellers and those living in blocks of flats, with young neo-fascists.

What emerges from this polyphony is a complex story of a ‘city without memory’. A powerful book written in the uncompromising light of the reporter’s spotlight, without lenience but also without definitive judgements.”
