The lecture “On the visuality of poetry. From Theocritus of Syracuse to Stanisław Dróżdż” will focus on the most interesting notions connected with the eponymous visual poetry, whose scope includes numerous poetic and visual phenomena, from Greek puns that encapsulated the message in concrete shapes, to various experiments of medieval and modern poets, to the oeuvre of 20th-century concrete poets, including Stanisław Dróżdż from Wrocław.
The lecture will follow a chronological order while making references to the crucial typologies of visual poetry. Numerous examples of picture poems will be provided. As a result the audience will be systematically acquainted with the phenomenon by confronting theoretical notions with concrete instances of the interpenetration of word and image.
