TADEUSZ MINCER — ‘IS CULTURAL COLOUR-BLINDNESS POSSIBLE?’ 23.04.12 Start: 23.4.12 (poniedziałek), godz. 18 Start on: 23.4.12 (Monday), 6PM

A lecture of Tadeusz Mincer, a part of ‘On the agenda…’ cycle.

In order to avoid being called a racist, we tend to say that the colour of the skin does not matter. But is this sort of colour-blindness a sufficient strategy?
Links between visual sphere and racial and racist theories will be presented during the lecture. Cultural history of the colour, thought in this way includes the visualisations of human kind that come from the 19th century, but also American Minstrel Shows and ethnographic expositions that we try not to remember. It also includes contemporary Internet memes, where visual conceptions of ‘races’ are reborn again. During the lecture, the author will try to answer the question what is race nowadays and what is the meaning of skin colour. Are we really able to not perceive it, or maybe it’s a luxury only some can afford?
