The Open System, the Collection, the Disapprover – these are but a few keywords connected with the practice of Wanda Gołkowska, a Wrocław-based artist, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław and lecturer whose art made over a period of more than 50 years represents key notions for a discussion about Polish contemporary art.

The starting point for the meeting is the publication of the book A Letter Written over a Lifetime – Open system (List pisany przez całe życie – Układ otwarty), which has assumed the form of a peculiar dictionary outlining the artist’s practice through her own words and works, concepts and private notes.

Apart from two short lectures introducing Gołkowska’s work and her vocabulary, the meeting will include the screening of archival films and conversations with the artist.

It will be concluded by a discussion of the invited guests, who will talk about issues such as the privacy of her archive vs. the creation of an artistic alter ego, the secrecy of the creative process, biographical interpretations, designing the context, or the status and intentionality of the archival presentations.

Participants:
• Dr Jolanta Studzińska (introduction to the publication)
• Prof. Anna Markowska
• Prof. Anita Wincencjusz-Patyna
• Małgorzata Miśniakiewicz (introduction to Gołkowska’s art, moderation of the discussion)
