“The excess of work, the void of work, the precarisation of work. The social consequences of the transformation of employment in the 21st century.”

Institute of Sociology (University of Wrocław), the Academy of Art and Design students (the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass), the Wrocław Contemporary Museum in cooperation with The Academy of Young Scholars and Artists, the Polish Sociological Association (Wroclaw Branch) and the Students’ Circle for Social Initiatives at the University of Wrocław are pleased to invite scholars, artists and activists to participate in interdisciplinary seminar “The excess of work, the void of work, the precarisation of work. The social consequences of the transformation of employment in the 21st century.”
 
The seminar will take place on 25 October 2013 (Friday), at 16:00 – 20:00, in the Wrocław Contemporary Museum (pl. Strzegomski 2a, Wrocław, Poland). The goal of this seminar is to provide a venue for an in-depth discussion about social processes and consequences of the transformations taking place in the sphere of work in the 21st century.

The organizers aim at addressing the question about the genesis of the precarisation of employment, the ways of experiencing and coping with precarious jobs by employees, as well as the forms of resistance and socio-political alternatives to precarisation. We invite to participate the representatives of academy, culture and art and the activists of social movements and trade unions dealing with the employment issues in practice.

The seminar will be accompanied by the workshop „The excess and void. Responsible design in the area of: poverty, hunger/consumption, waste” led by Karina Marusińska (The Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design).

The participants of the workshop will be interdisciplinary groups consisting of the Academy of Art and Design students (the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass) and the University of Wrocław students (Institute of Sociology). The outcomes of the workshops will be displayed at the Wroclaw Contemporary Museum between 25 October and 8 November 2013 and the Centre for Innovation of the Academy of Art and Design between 30 November and 1 December 2013.

The seminar and workshop are pre-events of the interdisciplinary “Excess and Void” conference organized by the Academy of Young Scholars and Artists on 30 November and 1 December 2013.
