Youth subcultures have not been abandoned by teenagers, although they are not the same as under communism or in the 1990s, when they constituted an experience shared by an entire generation. Today they serve the role of cultural niches. I would like to present the effects of a several-year-long empirical study of youth subcultures in Poland in the 21st century, and to show a model of communication between musicians and listeners in these groups. On the one hand, I am going to focus on the senders and analyse the message of songs in punk rock, Oi!, heavy metal and hip-hop. On the other hand, I would like to look at the listeners in subcultures, taking into account the model of the perfect member in order to present the key role played by music in subcultures and the relations between musicians and their fans today.

Dr Michał Lutostański completed Interdisciplinary Doctoral Studies at the SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities. He lectured at the Cardinal Wyszyński University in Warsaw, the Maria Grzegorzewska University and the SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Author of the book “Brzydkie słowa, brudny dźwięk” (Ugly words, dirty sound). He researches teenage music and subcultures. He works as an account director at 4P Research Mix, where he is in charge of marketing research. He is a member of the board of the Polish Association of Market Researchers and Pollsters.
