The practice of Tony Cragg – one of the revelations of contemporary art, a co-creator of the phenomenon of New British Sculpture, which has probably been the most influential revolution in contemporary sculpture since the Geometry of Fear, coined by Herbert Read in 1952 – will be presented against the background of selected theoretical contexts. References will be made to Vorticism and its fascination with the development of the British civilization, to the thought of Claude Levi-Strauss, an outstanding theorist and structuralist, to Jerzy Bereś’s practice that restored direct contact with Earth, and to conceptions such as Pontus Hulten’s sensual museum and Wolfgang Welsch’s transhumanist postulates. The visual material will refer to the broader context of Tony Cragg’s outstanding practice, particularly to the most recent monographic exhibitions curated by Eulalia Domanowska in cooperation with Jarosław Pajek, Bogusław Dobrowolski, Zbigniew Guła, Dorota Monkiewicz and the teams of the Polish Sculpture Centre in Orońsko and Wrocław Contemporary Museum.

Dorota Grubba-Thiede holds a PhD in art studies, which she received from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. She lectures at the Interdepartmental Institute of Art Studies of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and the Polish Institute of World Art Studies. She is interested in interdisciplinary research on contemporary art and its popularization. Apart from her experience as an exhibition curator, she has run a series of lectures-meetings at Gdańsk City Culture Institute entitled Shapes in the spheres of meaning – the social contexts of contemporary sculpture (2014-2015).
