A city is more than just its people. Amid the maze of streets, traffic jams, and bustling sidewalks lies a true urban jungle – a world of species we often fail to notice or simply overlook. As we get up and head to work, hundreds of species of plants, insects, birds, and arachnids begin their daily rhythms, turning their leaves toward the sun and, at night, taking over the alleys, canals, and quiet parks. Among them are native inhabitants as well as newcomers from all over the world. During our walk, we’ll work together to catalogue the living organisms in and around the Museum, exploring the life that unfolds unnoticed all around us.
BIO
dr Hanna Sztwiertnia – an ornithologist with a Ph.D. in biological sciences – works professionally in ornithological monitoring and extracurricular nature education. She serves on the board of the Silesian Ornithological Society (an association focused on studying the abundance and distribution of birds in Silesia and on their conservation) and Szklane Pułapki Foundation (“Glass Traps”; a foundation that educates the public and works to prevent bird collisions with glass surfaces). Since 2012, she has been a co-organiser of the scientific Bukówka Camp, where the autumn migration of birds through the Sudetes is studied. In her free time, she also works as a Sudeten Mountains tour guide.
