This performance straddles the line between a monologue and a visual metamorphosis. Facing the audience, the artist constructs a narrative set within a precisely defined situational and temporal framework. The key points of reference for the performance are defined by verticals, horizontals, the event horizon, the passage of time, and the central axis of the story being told.
A crucial layer of the performance is its visual process – a narrative undergoing constant transformation. Here, the spoken word intertwines with the dynamic changes taking place in my costume and within its spatial context. The dynamics of this transformation are generated by the movement of my hands, which are responsible for the constant appearance and disappearance of individual elements of the set design.
The text and structure of the performance stem from experiences gathered over nearly fifty years of Zarzycka’s artistic practice. It is a thoroughly subjective statement, an attempt to juxtapose her private “artistic cosmos” with the so-called reality of the art world in which we all function.
“I consciously undertake this (perhaps doomed to failure from the start) futile endeavour. For I am committed to reflecting on the categories of presence and absence, fulfilment and unfulfilment, as well as visibility and invisibility – achieved through standing out or conforming.
As an artist who is an integral part of the art world, I want to present not only my own views and insights, but above all – to reveal my doubts.”

BIO
Ewa Zarzycka – an artist working in the field of conceptual art – practices performance art, including a specific form known as “spoken performance,” as well as drawing as a means of recording her own texts, diagrams, maps, and charts; she also creates objects, videos, and installations. She currently teaches the course “Processual Actions and Performance” in the postgraduate Mediation and the Art Market programme at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. Her works are held, among others, in the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw, the National Museum in Wrocław – Four Domes Pavilion, the Józef Robakowski Exchange Gallery, the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Wrocław Contemporary Museum, Zachęta in Warsaw, MOCAK in Kraków, Andrzej Ciesielski's My Archive Foundation, and Zachęta in Lublin. She is a scholarship recipient of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. She has received fellowships from the City of Wrocław and the City of Lublin. Documentation of her work is held at the Secondary Archive / Artists of Central and Eastern Europe and the Saga Archive in Switzerland. She is a recipient of the Katarzyna Kobro Award, presented during the 20th edition of the award. She has been actively engaged in performance art since the 1980s.
